As the temperature drops, Croup amongst other bugs is already appearing. Homeopathy offers lovely remedies to help nurture your little one through this time and help to give you more sleep through the early hours of the morning.

Croup is a virus that affects the airways, in particular the voice box and the windpipe. Often this virus begins with a runny nose, cough and a fever. With Croup, there is a swelling in the voice box and windpipe that makes it difficult to breathe. The cough may begin as a normal cough then change to a characteristic barking cough and often a sound when they breathe in. The cough is usually a dry cough but can often alternate between a dry cough and a ‘wet’ cough where you can hear mucus being coughed up or rattling in their chest. Sometimes in the middle of the night, your child may develop the barking cough suddenly without any sign of illness prior to this. Your child may appear quite well during the day or have a mild cough but at night develop a barking cough and may have trouble breathing. It is usually worse at night or in the evening as the temperature drops.

The Homeopathic remedies you will want on hand are Aconite, Spongia and Hepar sulph.

Aconite

Give at the first sign of a cold

This remedy may last throughout but you may find it stops working after 24-48 hours or even sooner

Spongia

Dry cough – whether barking cough or hacking dry cough

When Aconite stops working

Difficulty breathing with a dry cough

This remedy may still work for the ‘wet’ cough but if not time to change

Alternate with Hepar sulph if the cough alternates with a ‘wet’ cough so give during dry cough

Hepar sulph

Wet cough – can be barking or just a wet mucus sounding cough

When Spongia isn’t helping

Difficulty breathing with a wet cough

This may work for the dry cough as well but if not us Spongia and alternate as the cough changes from wet to dry and back to wet

This should help get you through this illness by lessening the symptoms and hopefully you will all sleep better through the night.

Other remedies that can be really supportive for your child is Vital Potions ‘Kids Coughs and Colds Herbal Tea’, Vital Potions ‘Kid’s Croup Herbal Tincture Mix’ Vitamin C with zinc and ENT for Kids available at Wholistic Health Macedon Ranges.

So this condition is actually quite common. This condition happens when there is an inflammation of the cornea and area surrounding the eye when there isn’t enough liquid tears produced. These tears are normally produced to clear away anything such as dirt etc that can come in contact with the eye and also provides nutrients and oxygen to the eye.

What are the symptoms?

Painful eyes so they will close their eyes or squint.

Blink a lot.

There may be a yellow discharge.

You will most likely see the white of the eye is red as it’s irritated and no tears to help heal the eye.

Your dog will most likely be miserable and lying around rather than playing because of the pain.

If left unattended, this condition can irritate the eye and cause ulceration of the cornea so best to get on top of this as soon as possible. There can also be scarring of the cornea which can affect the eye sight. This is usually a condition in dogs that are older and although both eyes are usually affected, there may be one worse than the other.

How does this happen?

There are some things that can interfere with the production of tears including:

Autoimmune disease where the body attacks the cells that produce tears. This is believed to be an inherited disease but isn’t well understood.

Medication can cause this, in particular any sulphur based drugs.

Hypothyroidism or other systemic health conditions.

Poor diet that can affect organs such as the liver and pancreas can contribute to this and many many other conditions.

Homeopathy for Dry Eyes

Getting to the root of the problem is always the best way forward. Finding why this is occurring and resolving any systemic issues is essential or otherwise this condition will continue to recur. There are however, some remedies you can try for acute flare ups.

Thuja

This remedy is a great eye remedy and anything that is made worse from any kind of jab. The eyes appear as red and irritated. There can be discharge that cause the lids to stick together after sleep as is seen in conjunctivitis. Worse left side and worse from bright lights. Better from warmth and covering.

Lycopodium

Very irritated eyes, especially in the evening. Very painful and won’t want to open the eyes as they are worse from any light. There may be digestive issues alongside dry eyes. Worse on the right side.

Alumen

This remedy is for lots of eye conditions and they won’t want to move their eyes so will probably be lying still with eyes closed. They could be very irritable and even tend towards moments of rage. Better from warmth, still and probably left alone. There could again be digestive issues.

Pulsatilla

This is a great remedy when there is a yellow discharge anywhere in the body so great for dry eyes with discharge. The dog will feel the eyes are itchy and very irritated so may be constantly trying to scratch with their paws. They will be miserable but rather than angry more seeking sympathy and cuddles. Again, they could have digestive issues along side this condition. These dogs will feel better near fresh air and worse in a warm room.

Rhus tox

This is a great eye remedy and may occur if your dog also has any joint pain. There will be yellow discharge. They will want to be still but there is a restlessness in this remedy that the pain will come on after lying in the one position for a while so they will need to change position every few hours or so. They will want warmth. Worse when first waking so will need to move for a while to warm up. Worse from light.

If you find these remedies aren’t working or you want to resolve the reason behind dry eyes, feel free to book an appointment or a free 15 minute chat to see if we’re a good fit.

1 What breed of dog are you considering?

If you love walks, hiking, bike riding, running so lead a very active life, you will do well with an active dog who would love to join you on your adventures. If you prefer a more sedentary life, or you have an injury and can’t exercise very much, you would be much better off with a smaller dog that requires less exercise and one that won’t pull you over when you walk them. Dogs need to be walked ideally twice a day. A walk is about exercise, stimulation and learning. Each time you walk you are building a relationship with your dog, teaching them about socialising, training and fun, so if you are unable to walk your dog you need to find a dog walker who can make sure they are walked ideally twice daily.

2 Are you happy to have your dog living inside with you?

Dogs are pack animals. When you bring your dog home, they are going to see themselves as a part of the pack and will want to know where you are all the time. If you leave your dog outside, this is very stressful for them as they can’t ‘look out for you’ if they can’t see you or be around you. This is a very outdated way of thinking about a dog that they ‘belong outside’. If you have a baby, you will notice your dog will want to be near to protect the baby. If someone comes near the pram who is a stranger, your dog will be there for protection. They know the baby cannot fend for itself so they will often sleep near the baby and alert you if something isn’t right.

3 Are you bringing another dog in to your home?

If you already have a dog, you need to consider how they will get along. You will ideally match the energy of the first dog so they will get along. There is a process to helping them get to know each other and if they don’t get along, seriously think about your choice of second dog. If they can meet first and you can see how they get along or not, this is really important. They will also be teaching the new dog the ‘house rules’ and the new dog will be looking for guidance.

4 Are you ready for a dog to come in to your life?

Dogs read energy. If you are afraid, they will look for what is causing you anxiety eg another big dog and will do whatever they can to protect you. This can mean trying to attack the other dog. You need to learn to not be afraid, or to not let them know. They read energy from other dogs too so there will be dogs they know just want to play and they will know dogs that are more aggressive so will either try to avoid them or again, try to protect you or defend themselves. If you are arguing, they will pick up on this and will become distressed. Yep, everything you do affects your dog.

Once you find the right dog for you and your lifestyle, rest assured they will be the love of your life and bring you never ending joy, love, cuddles and lots of laughter.

If you are looking for natural health solutions for your new puppy or dog, I work with dogs using Homeopathy and diet to give them the healthiest life possible. Go here to book a free chat to see if I can help you.

Some say it’s ‘normal’ to experience pain every month. I tend to view pain as the body’s way of telling us something is out of whack. The body is always attempting to come back in to balance but sometimes needs a little help and in cases of period pain, the body is crying out for help. Some also experience migraines and nausea with or without vomiting as well as pain. Some women experience pain from their first period (so not fair) others after a period of major stress, hormonal imbalances or even some medications that can disrupt our hormonal system.

Some explanations for this pain can be; endometriosis, poly cystic ovarian syndrome or fibroids, all of which can be eased with the help of homeopathy, nutrition and herbs. These are all ‘Western Diseases’ so there may be some lifestyle changes that can also help here too. The pain can however, have no identifiable underlying organic cause. If you have taken the Contraceptive pill or steroids even if it was many years ago, this could be still disrupting your hormones. The good news is, we can clear them out of your system.

If menstrual pain is something you suffer, you may want to look at ways we can help you resolve this pain. Yep, there are many remedies that can help you with this. Homeopathic remedies that have been traditionally used for a couple of hundred years for this such as; Magnesium phos, Sepia, Lachesis, Pulsatilla or Lycopodium. These are some more common remedies, however, there are literally hundreds of remedies that can help with period pain so while you can try a couple of different remedies, you will most likely require a long consultation to work out what is behind your individual pain.

Together with homeopathy, there are many natural remedies that have traditionally been used to help your body ease some of that pain and other symptoms. There is a lovely herbal mix we can offer you, herbal tea, the very popular magnesium supplement Bassica, practitioner only Fish Oils (you don’t want the cheap ones as they aren’t tested for heavy metals or other nasties that can make things worse for you), Tissue salts and of course you can try the float tank, packed full of magnesium to help ease pain. Try this once weekly as you will be working on your general stress levels, help to reduce pain and help you sleep.

“I had extreme pain mid menstrual cycle. After seeing a specialist I was diagnosed with a uterine polyp. It was highly recommended that I have surgery immediately to remove my polyp, I was told no natural remedy would remove it. I quickly made an appointment with Kate. After 2-3 months of taking Kate’s administered homeopathic remedy… it was gone!” B, Victoria.
